Hair Makeover with In-Trim Hair @The Aperia, Singapore

Sponsored

Hair woes are like the end of the world to many women. Lately, I frowned whenever I look at my tresses in the mirror. They looked disheveled, lackluster and limp. I was desperately in need of a fresh change of colour + a hair trim. I have been meaning to try pink highlights or any new hair colours I have not tried before. (I also wanna be a swag blogger right!)

To my delight, I was invited by In-Trim Hair for a hair makeover with my choice of hair services! Today, I am going to share my experience at In-Trim Hair with you guys.

Just a little background on In-Trim Hair, this salon is not a new kid on the block. It has its humble beginnings at The Concorde for almost 11 years before they decided to shift to this new space at The Aperia Mall, Kallang Avenue. It has since been in operation at this swanky office building cum retail mall for three months.

When I first stepped into the salon, I was particular drawn to its pop art decor. FYI, it is the first & only pop art theme salon in Singapore! The funky wall paper and the bright colours really cheers one up! (especially when you are feeling a lil' nervous like how I was, shown in below pic...)

Before haircut - flat, dry & dull hair.
My hair was dry & lifeless as I had bleached it before. I always avoided layering my hair because I want my hair to look volumnous. Little did I know that a good haircut with a right amount of layers can make hair look more 'alive', thus projecting a younger image! (You must find the right hairstylist though!)

The director stylist, Jessie snipped quite a bit of my dry ends away.
Director stylist, Ms Jessie Siaw was very friendly & helpful. She gave me useful advice on which colours to pick so I can achieve the results intended without damaging my hair. She & her team also provided me with tips to maintain & style my hair. They honestly told me that those beautiful big waves are a result of styling or using hairstyling tongs/iron/gadgets. Perming is not enough to do a good job.

Aren't these colors lovely? Guess which one is my base (brown) colour?
I was impressed by the choice of hair dye products used at In-Trim -- Shiseido. This is such a trusty Japanese brand that needs no further introduction. I literally feel safe with Shiseido products on my hair (and face too by the way!).
Can I revamp my face to look like her as well? LOL
Check out my Chun Li hairstyle with disgusting black roots grow-outs!

Zumba For Beginners: FAQ

Zumba has been the hottest in-thing in Singapore for almost 4 years now. I am sure many of my female readers would have heard of it, or even contemplating to try it since forever. LOL.

Below is my feeble attempt to answer some frequently asked questions I get from my friends & family about Zumba.

Disclaimer: I am not a Zumba expert nor a qualified instructor or the likes. I am just a regular person who was trying to lose weight for her wedding, and accidentally stumbled upon the awesome dancelike sport. I made Zumba a hobby since more than 2 years ago. Zumba is the ONLY hobby I could happily upkeep (I am very fickle when it comes to sticking to a particular activity. I get bored with routines easily, therefore I usually give up on a new hobby after 3 months, and that says a lot about how fun Zumba is, at least for me.) :)

Zumba has changed my life and my lifestyle, in a positive way. I wish the same for you!

______________________________________________________________________________
Q1. Is Zumba only for people with a dance background?

A1. No, you don't need a dance background to enjoy Zumba. No doubt having a dance background helps you look more together when you are doing it(except no one actually looks at you, unless you are dancing naked); and people with dance background pick up the steps a tad faster, BUT it is not limited to dancers. Zumba is not too difficult to follow. It is perfectly OK if you can't keep up 100% with the instructor or your classmates. Keep moving & enjoy the music! The key is to HAVE FUN like you're partying!

Q2. Is Zumba a dance or a workout? Why are the steps repetitive?

A2. It is a Latin dance inspired exercise routine (it's an exercise routine, not a proper dance performance, hence the repetitive movements) - so it's a mixture of both dance and workout. You know aerobics? Yeah it's something like that, but 10 times the fun, with sexier music!

Q3. I want to try Zumba, but I am scared I don't have the stamina. What should I do?

A3. Two ways to go about this:  1. Just go for a trial class first. If you feel faintish or breathless, take a break and drink water/isotonic drinks. No one will care if you stop, but your newfound Zumba classmates may freak out if you faint, so please know your limits. 2. Start with a Zumba Gold class and if you think you can manage, switch to a regular Zumba class.

Q4. I want to lose weight. How many times do I need to do Zumba?

A4. Have you heard of the saying "Abs are made in the kitchen, not in the gym"? I get it that you don't mean you want firm abs, but I hope you get my drift. To lose weight, you follow a simple equation below (over a period of time).

Daily total calories intake < Daily total calories expended

If you need to lose weight fast, a sure-fire way is to keep to 1200 calories per day, and do Zumba every day. But  but but...prior to that, your body must have been conditioned to do sports/exercise on a daily basis. If you have been out of condition for a long time, meaning you haven't been doing sports for a while, DO NOT TRY to suddenly do Zumba every day! Daily Zumba applies more for relatively healthy people with a good medical history. Consult your doctor, dietician, fitness trainer if in doubt.
One thing I am sure is this: if you are unwilling to kick off your bad eating habits or you eat MORE after you started Zumba (or any other exercises), you are NOT going to lose any weight. In fact, the latter makes you put on more weight! Surprise surprise.

Q5. I tried Zumba once/a few times, but I couldn't catch up with the dance steps! I felt so out of place, how?

A5. I'm sorry that you felt this way. Guess what? Many of us felt that too! I didn't know what the heck I was doing when I was in my first Zumba class! I only remembered I desperately downed a lot of water after each song. That being said, I encourage you to keep going to Zumba classes, or try different instructors until you find someone whom you can follow and you like. It is important you like your Zumba instructor's moves - only then you can truly enjoy the 1-hour class.

Q6. I didn't lose as much weight/burn as much calories as I wanted to with Zumba, why is that so?

A6. (Pls kindly refer to Q4. for weight-loss queries) If you meant that each time you do Zumba, you burn lesser calories than the advertised '500 calories & above', then there may be a possibility that you are already quite skinny/small-built. Not everyone will burn 500 calories - it pretty much depends on how heavy you are to begin with. If you are big, yet you burn lesser than 500 calories - another possibility is that you have not gone "all out"/"full force" with your movements; or perhaps you are a newbie still trying to figure out your steps. In the case where you are not a newbie (let's say you do Zumba regularly for a year and you watch your diet carefully) and you are still unable to achieve your weight-loss goals due to your two left feet, sadly, I'd then say " Go try something else!"

Q7. I want to try Zumba, but I don't know where to go?

A7. (Frankly speaking, I secretly rolled my eyes when I hear your question. You cannot Google meh??  Unless you don't have internet access lah.)

Okay I shall be kind and tell you more. I personally attend lessons by 1Fiesta. They cover many locations in Singapore, by different instructors. (You really do need internet access to read up more about how 1Fiesta works, and to book your classes online.) My personal favourite instructor is Ms Farah Fakar. I attend her weekly Tuesday lessons at Yio Chu Kang Grassroots Club. Whenever I feel fat or ambitious, I attend more lessons in a week, either with Farah on Sunday evenings at Waterloo Centre or with other 1Fiesta instructors depending on my schedule & convenience.

My workout buddies & I after Farah's class at Yio Chu Kang Grassroots. Farah, the instructor, on the extreme right.
I have tried Zumba with many 1Fiesta instructors and other than Farah, I enjoy Zumba-ing with Sabrina, Gerald, Shannon and Faiz as well. Besides 1Fiesta, I also like Cyndi's Zumba lessons which are held on Wednesday evenings at 8 on Claymore.

Q8. Do I have to wear Zumba clothes to classes, as in those sports wear with the word "Zumba" splashed across it?

Review of Rose Veranda Hi-Tea Buffet, Shangri La Hotel Singapore.

Top Lifestyle Blogger Singapore

It was my girlfriend's birthday and we decided we want to be tai tai (Singaporean slang for 'Lady of Leisure') for an afternoon, hence we sashayed down town for a hi-tea session. Over the years, I heard a lot about Rose Veranda, Shangri La Hotel. I bet many Singaporeans did as well. Some time back, I dined at The Line, which is another restaurant of Shangri La, and I absolutely loved the variety and quality of food there.

Thinking that a hi-tea session at a five star hotel will be a great thing to do for a birthday celebration, we went ahead to meet at the said destination.

Despite its location in town, Shangri La hotel isn't as accessible as the rest of the hotels along Orchard Road, mainly because it is not near to a MRT station nor bus stop. There is a walking distance from the main road. I hailed a cab from Ang Mo Kio and it took me 15 minutes to arrive Shangri La.

There is a free shuttle bus service that loops from Orchard Road to Trader's Hotel then to Shangri La Hotel. You can check out their website or call the concierge for more information.

---

I'll first let photos tell my story, before I review the whole hi-tea experience.

Simply Her Beauty & Wellness Retreat 2015

Top Beauty Blog

Simply Her launches her first beauty & wellness retreat on 25 April 2015 at Orchard Parade Hotel. Thanks to Her World, two complimentary event passes were sent to me, so I invited my girlfriend to kick back & relax with me on that beautiful (but rainy) Saturday morning & afternoon.

Upon registration, we were given a towel and a bottle of water to prep us for the yoga session. Unfortunately, due to visitation of Aunty Scarlet, I decided to give this one a miss.

My girlfriend and I went ahead with our skin analysis by Thomson Well Woman Clinic, which is able to tell us how young our skin age is, and what are the area of improvements and how to go about resolving skin issues with the aesthetic services they provide.

Doesn't this shot look hilarious? My gf & I burst out in laughters when we saw this pic.

I looked like I am teleporting to another world! It was really fun trying this machine for the first time.

Nervous whilst waiting for my results! My skin looked quite horried due to recent lack of sleep.

The staff handed us a tiny slip of paper which revealed our skin age and areas of concerns such as hydration level, surface spots, hidden spots, acne, wrinkles, etc. My skin age is about 3 years younger than my actual age. According to them, this is good news! (All thanks to my Korean beauty regime, I guess.)

My gf's turn now. I think she was nervous too!

While we were doing our skin analysis, the rest were in a separate room doing yoga with the two instructors from Pure Yoga, Kristin Khor and Kristin Lewis.

Who produces the best all-purpose balm/creams? The Americans or the French?

Review of The Honest Co. organic healing balm and Creme Simon Creme Universelle

Recently the skin on my legs seemed to be parched and itchy with some bumps - look a lot like eczema, except that it is not. Pretty annoying as I couldn't find any body lotion that can sooth it without giving me another bout of sensitivity. On the other hand, my face has clogged pores & a few pimples, due to PMS and with the Singapore heat (34degrees, can you imagine?).

These skin problems bugged me a bit. And I was hoping if there is a one-cream-solves-all miracle solution, that will be wonderful!
Singapore Top Beauty Blogger

When I was first introduced to Crème Simon Crème Universelle, I was pretty thrilled. The consultant advised me that this is their star product and has the following benefits:

  • Relieve Chapped Lips
  • Regenerate Dry Elbows and Cracked Heels
  • Soothe Sun-Burnt Skin
  • Relieve Common Skin Irritations
  • Moisturise Dry Cuticles
  • - See more at: https://www.creme-simon.com/collections/creme-universelle_1/#sthash.YqA8jCh3.dpuf
    • Moisturize & deeply hydrate on any part of the skin
    • Relieve skin irritations
    • Regenerate dry elbows and cracked heels
    • Relieve chapped lips
    • May be used on pimples (what?!) due to its anti-inflammatory properties
    • Moisturize cuticles
    Moisturise Dry Cuticles
Basically, this is a multi-purpose product that is portable for daily use! I was thinking if it does what it claims, then it is every girl's LIFE SAVER! Hence, without second thoughts, I bought one for my own use, alongside with other products.

On the same day, my hubby returned home from San Franciso with a surprise - a tube of The Honest Co. Organic Healing Balm for me to try it on my bumpy skin on my legs. (le hubs is a health-conscious individual who aims to try all the organic stuff in the market)

If you haven't heard of The Honest Company yet, it is co-founded by Jessica Alba in 2011 and its products are retailed in the U.S. As the name of the company suggests, The Honest Co. focuses on ethical consumerism, offering eco-friendly, non-toxic and organic comsumer goods. It is not exactly a beauty/makeup company, but it is a place where you can safely buy household stuff for your family and your baby.

Jessica Alba and her products. Look gorgeous here!

When I first held these two products in my hands, all I could think of is : Which is better? Which one should I use first? Seriously, BOTH offer similar benefits and both are meant for the same purposes! Furthermore, both also claimed to be free of the bad stuff. Eg. Crème Universelle is oil free, paraben-free and silicon-free; while Organic Healing Balm is " honestly free of petroleum, mineral oil, lanolin, parabens, fragrances, dyes & most common allergens" quoting the official website.

Both confused me for a while, and at the same time,
    piqued my curiosity.

    Oil-free. Paraben free. Silicone free.
    Over 90% natural ingredients
    - See more at: https://www.creme-simon.com/collections/creme-universelle_1/#sthash.YqA8jCh3.dpuf
That's when I told myself, I am gonna review BOTH and see which one is the ultimate winner! Therefore...I came up with this.
Review of The Honest Co. organic healing balm and Creme Simon Creme Universelle
Let's do a comparison review side by side!
I took about 10 days to test out these two for myself and here I am, presenting to you the thoughts I have for each one.

How Not To Debt For Beauty

    Budget Beauty blog Singapore

Ever since I started Instagramming my monthly beauty hauls

I get questions like these all the time:

    Did you buy all this?
Where did you get your money from?
How do you manage to not burn a hole in your pocket?

Let's face it. Women spend tons of their hard-earned money on beauty & fashion. For at least once in our lives, we resorted to eating plain bread at the end of the month, because we don't have money left after shopping! Of course we need to have that latest shade of Chanel lipstick and that tenth bottle of brightening serum, even when have not opened the previous tube of lipstick we bought last week. Exactly. We need it.
    Top Singapore Budget Beauty Blog

On the other hand, there are a handful of oblivious people(these folks usually have no idea where their money went to) who have a misconception that beauty products don't cost much, but have you REALLY sit down to total up your monthly spending on beauty, hair, body products & services? I am sure these set you back at least a few hundreds to a few grands (God forbid!) per month.

Allow me to share some ideas to you beauty junkies out there, how to stay sane and not to get into debt coz of shopping!
